Your guide to impacted molar extraction (wisdom teeth removal)

Table of Contents

Impacted molars can be a serious issue for many patients, causing significant pain and discomfort. When the “wisdom teeth” are stuck, it can lead to complications requiring extraction. Drs. William Collins and Beau Seager, of Treehouse Dental Family and Cosmetic Dentistry of Highland, Utah, take the time to educate patients on this procedure and what to expect.

What is an impacted molar, anyway?

Our team best describes an impacted molar as a wisdom tooth (the third set of molars) that does not have enough room to fully emerge or develop properly. It might remain stuck under your gum or at awkward angles, causing pain and poor bite alignment.

How do I know if I have an impacted molar?

You might feel some discomfort, minor swelling, or notice that the back of your gums feels weirdly crowded. Some people also experience jaw pain or occasional headaches. But sometimes, impacted molars are sneaky and show no symptoms—our dentists can help you spot them with X-rays.

Is the extraction going to hurt?

Molar teeth removal shouldn’t be painful! Our dentists use anesthesia or sedation to ensure you are nice and comfortable during the procedure. You might feel some pressure, but actual pain is a no-go. Post-procedure soreness can be managed with rest, ice packs, and a little extra TLC for yourself.

How long does the whole thing take?

The actual procedure is surprisingly quick. Many extractions are over within an hour.

What can I eat after my extraction?

Soft foods are highly recommended following the procedure, though many enjoy just beverages the first day as they recover. Think yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and soups. Avoid straws, as it can cause dry socket, a painful condition known as dry socket, which can happen when the blood clot is dislodged and affect the healing process.

Will I have any swelling following the procedure?

Mild swelling is normal, and ice packs can help keep it under control. Our team provides you with aftercare instructions to ensure that you heal and recover quickly and without any complications.

How long does it take to recover?

Most of our patients start feeling better in about three to five days, though a full recovery can take up to two weeks. Follow our dentists’ instructions, take it easy, and take time off social activities or work if necessary.
